Chewing Gum Can Relieve Stress

Recently, a survey from the United States, showed that 56 percent of respondents thought that chewing gum can help overcoming tension and easing pressure.

Can chewing gum really ease pressure? Actually, we can find appropriate basis thesis from the psychology. Everyone would have little tricks when feeling tense. For example, some people will repeatedly touched fingers while some people will keep stamping. This is actually a kind of way to transfer pressure and tension. Chewing gum can achieve the same effect. When you feel nervous, chewing gum will transfer your attention to the mouth, thus plays the role of keeping calm.

According to Sigmund Freud’s theory, people have different psychological need in different periods. When we are in childhood, we will suck our thumbs if feeling hungry, which is to satisfy the demand for food. When we face huge pressure, we often want to put all these pressure smashed. When chewing gum, we often associate the pressure for chewing gum and use teeth chew it to satisfy the need of untangling pressure.

In addition, chewing gum also brings us a psychological suggestion that chewing gum couldn’t be swallowed, eventually should be poured out. It was suggested that the pressure is temporary and it always have been solved one day.
